While picked-fresh-from-the-garden strawberries are the
best, store bought ones will do this time of year when strawberries are bountiful.
We had quite a few ripening strawberries in a whiskey barrel that would have
been perfect in a day or two, but alas, the chickens got to them first. The
follies of letting them free-range. Still, during the summer and after a
barbecue, there is nothing I like more than a large helping of strawberry
shortcake. Okay, so perhaps it is quite a few hours after eating said barbecue
food.
